Once attached to the front of your teeth, veneers can conceal a number of aesthetic blemishes. In some cases, they can even reshape your teeth.
How Can Veneers Enhance Your Smile?
Veneers cover the front of your teeth, enhancing those that show when you smile. Modern dental porcelain has a slight translucence. Therefore, your veneers will possess a natural shine, making them virtually identical to your dental enamel.
Once attached to the front of your teeth, veneers can conceal a number of aesthetic blemishes. In some cases, they can even reshape your teeth. Dr. Watson may recommend veneers for any of the following reasons:
- Dark internal stains that do not respond to teeth whitening
- Minor misalignment, one or two slightly rotated teeth, or small gaps in your smile
- Cracked, chipped, or worn front teeth
- One or more unusually shaped or disproportionately small teeth
Veneers are often incorporated into a smile makeover for even more comprehensive results.
Fabricating and Placing Your Porcelain Veneers
Before designing your veneers, Dr. Watson will first need to prepare your teeth. By removing a small amount of your dental enamel, he can create room for the porcelain, and help the veneers lie naturally on your teeth. Using an air abrasion instrument, this process will not damage your teeth, and will involve minimal discomfort.
Once your tooth is fully prepared, Dr. Watson will take impressions and, depending on whether your veneers are crafted on- or off-site, the next step can vary. If created onsite, he will use our CEREC® system to capture digital images. In these cases, he can design your veneers at a chairside computer.
You will participate in the planning process so that you can achieve your cosmetic goals. When the designs are finished, our in-office milling machine will fabricate your veneer, typically in one hour or less. Then Dr. Watson can place the veneer on your tooth during that same appointment.
If your veneer is fabricated at our off-site lab, it usually takes several weeks for the veneers to be completed. These restorations will be high-quality and very lifelike. The technicians make sure to match the veneer to the shape and color of your teeth. During your final appointment, Dr. Watson will attach the veneers to your teeth and examine the fit.
Are You a Candidate?
If you want to address cosmetic concerns on your teeth, veneers may be a good solution. Before recommending veneers, Dr. Watson will conduct a complete exam to make sure that your teeth are healthy enough for the treatment. To receive veneers, it is important that you have enough dental enamel.
Erosion, decay, and gum disease may affect your candidacy. However, after appropriate care, you may then qualify for treatment. If it is determined that you are unable to receive veneers, Dr. Watson can suggest other cosmetic dentistry options that may be more suitable for you.
