The Importance of Exams and Cleanings
Checkups and cleanings are an essential component of your dental health. You should schedule an appointment for yourself or your child approximately every six months. If you have a history of gum disease or recurring decay, it may be recommended that you maintain more frequent visits.
During your check-up appointment, our hygienist will clean your teeth, removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria. These substances are the leading causes of decay and gum disease, which is why regular dental visits are so important. At our practice, we treat toddlers, adolescents, and adults. We use very gentle methods, and we know how to put young or anxious patients at ease.
After your cleaning, Dr. Watson will conduct an oral exam. When you visit regularly, we can detect the early signs of decay and gum disease, before they cause significant damage. In most cases, we will take x-rays at every other visit. Our office uses digital imaging, which is sharper than traditional x-rays.
Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
Sealants and fluoride treatments can reduce the risk of tooth decay. We typically provide these treatments for children, but they can also benefit adults. Dr. Watson will apply dental sealants to the top of permanent molars. The clear plastic coating will harden, creating a barrier that will prevent food from gathering between the cusps. Sealants help keep starches and bacteria from coming into contact with dental enamel.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance that strengthens developing teeth. Although many foods and most city water contain fluoride, there is not enough for full dental protection. Dr. Watson can provide a wash, rinse, or varnish to more effectively safeguard your child’s smile.
